Official condolence and pastoral reflection

The Christian Council of Clergies Worldwide extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, congregation, the Archdiocese of Guayaquil and all who mourn the reported death of Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari while celebrating Mass in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

The unexpected loss of a minister of the Gospel during a sacred moment of worship brings profound sorrow to his family, fellow clergy and the wider Christian community. We pray that Almighty God will comfort the bereaved, strengthen his congregation and sustain all who mourn.

“Weep with them that weep.”

Romans 12:15 (KJV)

Christian compassion calls us to accompany the grieving with prayer, kindness and practical support. We entrust the departed to God’s mercy and caution against speculation about the circumstances of his death or assumptions about God’s hidden purposes.

Who shall be born and never die?

Ecclesiastes 3:1–2 reminds us that there is “a time to be born, and a time to die.” James 4:14 describes human life as a vapour, while John 11:25 proclaims Christ’s promise: “I am the resurrection, and the life.”

Although death brings sorrow, Christian faith offers hope in resurrection and eternal life. Luke 13:1–5 cautions against treating tragedy as proof that the deceased was more sinful than others. Our response must be compassion, humility and hope — not condemnation.

Church-safety directive

Protecting human life is a sacred responsibility.

Prayer must be accompanied by practical wisdom and responsible action. CCC Worldwide calls upon church governing bodies, dioceses, parishes, ministries and religious institutions to strengthen safety arrangements and protect clergy, worshippers, workers and visitors.

  1. Leadership accountability. Designate a competent safety officer or committee to coordinate inspections, report hazards and monitor corrective action.
  2. Regular inspections. Assess buildings, roofs, ceilings, balconies, electrical systems, fire precautions and heavy or suspended installations.
  3. Secure installations. Ensure crucifixes, crosses, statues, chandeliers, speakers and other heavy objects are properly installed, securely anchored and professionally assessed where necessary.
  4. Documented maintenance. Keep inspection records, identify defects, assign responsibility and ensure repairs are completed promptly.
  5. Immediate hazard control. Restrict access to dangerous areas and suspend unsafe equipment. Postpone or relocate activities when serious risks cannot reasonably be controlled.
  6. Emergency preparedness. Maintain clear exits, evacuation procedures, first-aid arrangements and reliable means of contacting emergency services. Train relevant staff and volunteers appropriately.
  7. Incident reporting. Record accidents, near misses and hazards. Refer serious incidents to competent authorities where required, without prejudging liability.
  8. Legal compliance and accountability. Observe applicable building, fire, electrical and public-safety requirements. Encourage hazard reporting without intimidation or retaliation.

Immediate call to action

CCC Worldwide urges every church to review its facilities without delay, secure obvious hazards, inspect heavy and suspended installations, keep emergency exits clear and arrange qualified professional assessments where necessary.

Church leaders should document findings, prioritise serious risks and verify that corrective measures are completed. Safety must be a continuing institutional responsibility, not merely a reaction to tragedy.

The precise circumstances of Father Sánchez Molinari’s reported death should be established through a competent and impartial investigation. No individual or institution should be accused of negligence without sufficient evidence.

Final pastoral message

May the memory of Father Patricio Sánchez Molinari inspire compassion, responsible Christian leadership and renewed commitment to protecting human life.

Who shall be born and never die? None of us can fully predict the end of our earthly journey. Let us choose compassion over indifference, wisdom over recklessness and responsibility over neglect. May our churches nurture faith while protecting human dignity and life.
