Published through Ndiigbo Worldwide Media on 20 October 2026, by Ndubuisi Daniel Chidera, as the Council’s institutional statement. Read the published record. A later statement, dated 23 October 2026 (reference CCCW/EDG/PUB/2026/1023/01), adds a pastoral reflection and a fuller church-safety directive. Read that statement.
The Christian Council of Clergies Worldwide expresses its profound sorrow and deepest institutional condolences following the reported tragic death of Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, a Catholic priest who reportedly lost his life when a large crucifix fell on him while he was celebrating Mass in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
On behalf of the Council and its leadership, we extend our heartfelt sympathy to his bereaved family, the Archdiocese of Guayaquil, his congregation, fellow clergy and all members of the Christian community affected by this painful loss.
The sudden death of a minister of the Gospel is deeply distressing, particularly when it occurs in the course of religious service. We recognise the grief of those who knew and loved him and stand with them in prayerful solidarity. We pray that Almighty God will comfort the bereaved, strengthen the grieving congregation and grant peace to all who mourn.
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
Responsible public conduct
The Council calls upon Christians, religious leaders, media organisations and members of the public to approach this tragedy with compassion, humility and respect for the deceased and the bereaved.
In Luke 13:1–5, Jesus cautioned against assuming that those who suffer tragic deaths are necessarily greater sinners than others. Accordingly, this incident must not be portrayed as evidence of divine punishment, nor should its spiritual meaning be asserted without sound biblical justification.
CCC Worldwide encourages responsible public commentary that respects human suffering, upholds Christian dignity and avoids speculation or premature attribution of blame. The circumstances should be established through appropriate and impartial inquiry.
Safety and responsible stewardship
While condolences remain the immediate priority, this tragedy also highlights the responsibility of religious institutions to protect human life in places of worship. CCC Worldwide calls upon churches, dioceses, denominations, ministries and religious facility administrators worldwide to review their safety arrangements and take timely preventive action.
- Conduct safety inspections of crosses, crucifixes, suspended fixtures, ceilings, lighting and other installations that could endanger clergy or worshippers.
- Ensure professional installation and maintenance of heavy fixtures and structural fittings, and address identified hazards promptly.
- Establish documented safety procedures covering routine inspections, maintenance, emergency preparedness and accountability.
- Cooperate with competent authorities and impartial investigations whenever serious incidents occur, preserving relevant evidence and avoiding premature conclusions.
- Protect worshippers and personnel by ensuring that church facilities and livestreaming equipment are installed and maintained safely.
This appeal is preventive and constructive. It does not allege negligence against any individual or institution connected with the Ecuador incident. The precise circumstances must be established through appropriate investigation.
Prayer and practical precautions are complementary responsibilities. Protecting clergy, worshippers, church workers and visitors is an essential expression of Christian stewardship and respect for the sanctity of human life.
Institutional position
The Christian Council of Clergies Worldwide reaffirms its commitment to biblical integrity, Christian unity, compassionate leadership, responsible ecclesiastical practice and human dignity. We encourage the global Christian community to respond through prayer, solidarity, responsible reflection and practical measures that may help prevent similar tragedies.
We once again extend our deepest condolences to Father Sánchez Molinari’s family, congregation, the Archdiocese of Guayaquil and the wider Christian community.
May Almighty God comfort all who mourn, strengthen those affected by this painful loss, and grant eternal rest to the departed according to His divine mercy. May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ abide with all who grieve. Amen.
Formally issued with condolence and Christian solidarity, for and on behalf of the Christian Council of Clergies Worldwide.
